SPECIAL EVENT GUIDELINES
The 4 Rs are an important part of any successful event: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot (compost). Please plan ahead to minimize the creation of waste and maximize the recovery of recyclable items. Follow these guidelines:
✓ Advertise your event as green, zero waste or eco-friendly.
✓ If serving food or beverages, utilize service ware that is reusable or
accepted in the recycling or organics programs. Note that the use of Styrofoam/styrene and compostable or “bio” plastics is prohibited by local ordinance.
▪ Provide reusable cups and plates or choose recyclable or compostable alternatives.
▪ Discourage the use of lids & straws.
▪ Use bulk dispensers for condiments.
▪ Provide water bottle/cup refilling stations.
✓ If shopping bags will be used, provide a reusable option, and encourage people to bring their own.
✓ Provide collection bins for traditional recyclables (bottles/cans), organics (food scraps, food-soiled paper) and garbage. If needed, provide bins for paper and cardboard as well.
Position recycling, organics and garbage bins in “stations.” Make sure a recycling bin is always paired with one for garbage. If food is part of the event, add an organics bin to each station. Make sure stations are located so event participants do not have to travel too far to find one.
If you will be using liner bags, chose one that is certified compostable for the collection of organics. A list of options can be found here: https://products.bpiworld.org/. Standard liner bags may be used for garbage and recycling. They must be clear. Note that liner bags are not necessary for use in collection carts (bottom photo) but must be used in our special event boxes (top photo).
Make sure that every bin is labeled so it is easy to tell what belongs inside. We provide generic labeling but large, eye-level, custom signs showing event-specific waste are best. Get creative!
✓ Ensure that all waste generated at your event is properly
sorted into the containers provided.
South San Francisco Scavenger Company representatives are here to help you. Contact us for assistance determining the necessary level of service for your event. Charges may apply. Keep costs down by following the above guidelines!
